Don Mann: Focusing on my Craft

Wednesday, Nov. 03, 2004 - 8:04 p.m.

Shut up, you're infantile and insolent. Peter Pan was a great story, right? Well, it's FICTION. Children grow up; it's only a fool who believes a mature adult loses their sense of humor and love for compulsive action with age. What a child DOES lose, however, is its grip on unfounded ideals and its favor for imagination over reality.

If you want to live life like a dream; make-believe and fantasy forever, then you will never grow up.

Maturity affords us the luxury of intelligence, allows us to make our worlds something a bit closer to fantasy, almost as enjoyable as make-believe.

No one takes me seriously anymore. I'm not ready to embrace a scenario in which my best work and ideas are laughed at.

No one appreciates my existence. Those that do, hide it; an act which undoes itself. I've never hesitated to vocalize my appreciation for others, and looking back perhaps did so too often. Perhaps I stroked your egos, maybe even put you in a prime position to condescend. Now I look around and see myself being talked down to by a bunch of children.

I've upped my standards for admiration, set new goals and ideals. Here are some of them:

1. A respectable individual embraces maturity, while maintaining a grasp on humor and spontaneity.

2. A respectable individual not only recognizes their faults, but makes realistic moves to improve oneself.

3. A respectable individual does not cling to the past.

4. A respectable individual comprehends every word on this page, or at least attempts to.

4. A respectable individual admires others for both comparable traits, and contrasting ones.

6. A respectable individual cares for others, whether others care for them or not.

7. A respectable person notices the error in my numbering, notifies me but does not attempt to humiliate me with my mistake.
